Bill Aitchison makes performances, videos and audio works for theatres, galleries and city spaces. Each project is radically different in form, but as a whole they are highly distinctive, recognisable for their very personal style, conceptual strength, humour, honesty and ambition. Working on a variety of scales that ranges from solo performances to largerscale group projects and participatory events, his productions span a range of disciplines and styles, including conceptual dance works, lectures, performances, guided tours of guided tours, a show in Chinese and Google translate, and an autobiographical political history set to an all-vinyl DJ set, to name but a few.
Highly mobile and often developing projects through artistic residencies, Aitchison's work is sensitive to language and sensibilities, and aims to make events that reflect specific local situations, changing and adapting shows as they travel and evolve. His work and teaching on the arts in public space has proven influential and he is known as a pioneer in site-sensitive performance. Aitchison writes original performances, is also a published author writing on the arts and society more generally and is engaged as an arts lobbyist.
Through his own work and the projects of Bill Aitchison Company, the desire is to continue to develop artistically and to remain relevant to the rapidly changing world. This he does through a high level of mobility, and through a series of strategic collaborations with artists and theatre makers across the world.
The Tour of All Tours is a guided tour of guided tours made new for each location. Bringing the worlds of art and tourism together, it asks us to see our cities in new ways, and encourages a fresh and innovative approach to the familiar format of the guided tour.
Indifference is a live art/dance duet that collides theories of free will and determinism with group dances set to popular songs like 'The Birdie Dance' and 'The Macarena', which slowly unravel in an explosive political and philosophical spectacle.
Vinyl is a solo show in which Bill plays a vinyl record and tells a story for each year of his life. A very special mix of high and low music, politics, childhood, art and life in this intelligent reflection upon life and the vinyl record.
Full programme of wraparound work, including: pre- and post-performance talks; mentoring students and emerging artists in contemporary performance making, working with their ideas and/or proposing projects; workshops/teaching around making videos of performances; walks about Aitchison's practice-as-research PhD; short or extended workshops on task-based performance, rhythm and on site-sensitive performance.
"...deliciously lunatic stage show … an irresistable outdoor romp through the most wildly conceived and delusional of conspiracy theories."
British Theatre Guide
"I basically spent the duration of the show, just under an hour, with either an untameable smile on my face or straight out laughter reverberating throughout my all."
NTS Radio, London
"...amusing, intelligent and sensual theatre."
