Casson & Friends has been created to acknowledge the value of collaboration in the creative process, focusing on interaction between members of the public, dancers and non-dancers, the creation of models and structures within which choreographic work can be created, and the use of technology and social media as a means of enhancing, promoting and distributing dance work.
None of the work Casson & Friends creates can be made without collaborators, or ‘friends’, whether longstanding or fleeting. Its aim is to create dance-focused work through interesting dialogues with interesting people, from dancers and digital artists to musicians and members of the public. Whether the focus is on product or process, the aim of Casson & Friends is to create and share forward-thinking and accessible dance for all.
The Dance WE Made is the record-breaking interactive dance performance that roams public spaces, inviting members of the public to devise original choreography in collaboration with UK-based dancer and choreographer Tim Casson. The newly created dances are then performed by Tim in each location, filmed and posted online for the world to see.
Selling Secrets is a site-specific dance work which is newly authored and choreographed in each location with members of the local community, and performed by professional dancers. Selling Secrets explores local peoples’ stories and secrets through a unique and intimate performance in a local hotel.
Fiend is a digital solo performance that uses Nijinsky's 'L'apres midi d'un Faun' as a starting point to explore themes of connection, how we see and how we are seen. The work uses innovative manipulation of live video to present multiple versions of the same performer, which interact through well-timed choreographic action.
Casson & Friends is able to deliver workshops around the work catering to all levels, no matter what age or level of dance experience. It can offer workshops on physical theatre and contemporary dance, to give participants an insight into the processes used by the company. It is also able to offer workshops in line with its collaborators such as dance and technology workshops. Casson & Friends is also open to taking part in residencies and masterclasses at a variety of levels.
“It’s a creative project that not only draws attention to public space and how we inhabit it, but exemplifies the creative force in each and every one of us.”
The Huffington Post on The Dance WE Made
"Modern dance with a 'participatory' element would, as I said, normally see me making my excuses and looking for the exit light. But I really liked the ebullient nature of The Dance We Made and its rather sweet approach to taking dance out on to the streets of London, inviting the public to almost inadvertantly reveal that there is, if not a dancer, then at least a creative type in everyone."
Creative Review Magazine
"Pretty groundbreaking stuff."
