Forced Entertainment is a group of six artists who have worked together since 1984 to make compelling, inventive and provocative new theatre. The company has been described as "the best group of stage actors in England" (The Times, 2004). Combining discussion, improvisation and writing, its rehearsal process is a creative laboratory that discovers unexpected and inspiring answers to questions of life and art.
The group’s work is rooted in theatre but it also makes ground-breaking forays into durational performance, gallery installation and digital media. The full repertoire and new developments are detailed on its website at www.forcedentertainment.com.
Based on the award winning novel by Ágota Kristóf and set during WW2, The Notebook tells the story of a pair of twin brothers evacuated to their impoverished grandmother’s farm in order to shelter from the conflict. Kristóf’s narrational language – bold, crisp and reduced – provides the basis for a compelling performance.
Forced Entertainment in an intimate and comical mode – a playful, poignant and at times delirious look forwards to futures both possible and impossible.
Other small-scale productions now touring: The Notebook, Void Story, Sight is the Sense that Dying People Tend to Lose First.
Forced Entertainment collaborate with Lebanese sound artist Tarek Atoui to create a compelling performance spectacle on an epic scale. With a cast of thirteen international performers, recorded soundtrack mixing electronics from Atoui and live instrumentation from an invited guest musician Tim Etchells leads Forced Entertainment into challenging new territory.
Company members lead a programme of wraparound activity to accompany productions including post-show discussions, talks and workshops on request. Free resource packs for productions are available to download from the website, and more info can be accessed via the Forced Entertainment Collection at the British Library.
Forced Entertainment have begun to live stream durational performances free on their website - see forcedentertainment.com for details of past and forthcoming livestreaming activity and more information about the company.
