European programmers tour Europe as part of SPACE

SPACE is a platform to Support the Performing Arts Circulation in Europe. It was established in 2009 by 10 national performing-arts institutions in Europe, including the British Council.

Since then SPACE has undertaken research in performing arts mobility to ensure that artists have greater opportunities to work throughout Europe, and that festivals present and feature a diverse range of artists and companies which differs year on year. SPACE provided European-wide training programmes for art managers, programmers and critics, and explored new models of mobility which aimed to encourage a better and fairer circulation of performance ensuring that festivals are not presenting the same companies in their line-up.

This research is now being put into practice. SPACE is supporting European exchanges and continuing to improve the quality of touring through tackling the imbalances between artists, countries and festivals circuits.

A number of European programmers have been chosen, with four from the UK, to participate in themed journeys, where 20 artists will visit two or three destinations. Here they will consider how programmers can improve the quality and sustainability of performance circulation, and will have the opportunity to see new work.

The objectives of these journeys are to

1. Share considerations and good practices on the topic of the journeys

2. Create a network of arts professionals sharing experiences together

3. Stimulate collaborative productions and projects initiated by the participants
