London-based company Avant Garde Dance embarked on a three-week tour to six cities in India with The Black Album
Led by Artistic Director Tony Adigun, Avant Garde Dance pushes the boundaries of hip-hop and contemporary dance. Their dynamic performances have musicality at their core and explore a myriad of styles, themes and media.
The Black Album is a triple-bill in which three distinctly different hip hop choreographies are woven together like a concept album.
Avant Garde Dance performed in Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai and also carried out an extensive outreach programme of workshops. The company also worked with Indian dance company, Swingers Dance Company and the two companies performed together on stage at Egmore Museum Theatre, Chennai.
In partnership with Ranvir Shah of Prakriti Foundation, Avant Garde Dance toured as part of Impulse, the British Council’s season of UK contemporary dance in India, and Parks New Festival. The tour was developed when the British Council invited Ranvir to see a wide range of UK dance companies at British Dance Edition 2014. Both parties saw Avant Garde’s work as an exciting way of connecting with the growing interest in hip hop amongst young people and dancers in India.
