We supported two artists from Candoco dance to travel to Armenia, Turkey and Croatia to lead two days of inclusive dance workshops in each country. They offered participants an insight into the company’s practice, combining contemporary dance techniques and creative choreography, inviting participants to explore ideas and be guided to create their own movement.
The company has worked within specialist schools as well as in mainstream education, so alongside ‘traditional’ local partners such as dance schools, venues and festivals, the workshops offered local British Council offices the opportunity to create partnerships with local NGOs and other bodies that are already engaging with arts and disability and/or social inclusion projects.
We are supporting Candoco Dance Company to undertake three projects in 2013, taking them from Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and Croatia, to Palestine and Jordan, and finally to Vietnam.
The first stage involved supporting four artists from Candoco dance to travel in pairs to Georgia and Armenia, and Turkey and Croatia, where they led two days of inclusive dance workshops in each country. They offered participants an insight into the company’s practice, combining contemporary dance techniques and creative choreography, inviting participants to explore ideas and be guided to create their own movement. Alongside ‘traditional’ local partners such as dance schools, venues and festivals, the workshops offered local British Council offices the opportunity to create partnerships with local NGOs and other bodies that are already engaging with arts and disability and/or social inclusion projects.
The second stage of this project is an ongoing three-country tour, covering Georgia, Albania and Armenia. Candoco presented performances of their Three Acts of Play triple bill alongside the film Outside In. The triple bill include the restaging project with Trisha Brown Dance Company of Set and Reset/Reset, Javier De Frutos's Studies for C and Wendy Houstoun’s Imperfect Storm (see video below).
The second project, in April, is supporting Candoco to take two pieces to Palestine and Jordan, where they will perform at the Ramallah Contemoorary Dance Festival and the Amman Contemporary Dance Festival. In Palestine, there will be two performances, one in Ramallah and one in Jerusalem. In addition, we are supporting four members of Candoco to run a two-week participatory project, including workshops with local dancers and culminating in performance piece that will be performed in Ramallah as a curtain-raiser for the main festival.
In September and October, our third project with Candoco will take place in Vietnam. They will perform a short piece by Emmanuel Gat at a contemporary dance festival in Hanoi, acocmpanied by workshops and talks. A second performance at Hanoi Opera House will launch our “British Week”, a celebration run by the British Council in Hanoi. Finally, Candoco will go to Ho Chi Minh city to present further workshops and performances.
